The new Mercury 450R is not just EP Barrus’ most powerful outboard, but the most powerful mass-production outboard on the market
Outboard specialist EP Barrus has pushed the envelope with its latest launch, the 450hp Mercury Racing 450R. Built around a supercharged 4.6-litre four-stroke V8, this model is the most powerful outboard engine you can buy today (Seven Marine’s 650hp unit remains a rarity).
But it’s not just power that it has going for it – the Mercury 450R is also 120kg lighter than its nearest competitor, the 425hp Yamaha XTO. Other key features include a boost bypass valve, which automatically adjusts maximum boost pressure to suit the ambient conditions. Engine heat can be managed by a high-capacity oil cooler and a midsection poppet valve.
Despite the extra power, the 450R still uses the same slimline cowling as the 300R – good news for those who want to pack several of them onto their transom.
Indeed, the 450R will be compatible with the Zero Effort Digital Controls and all Mercury Marine digital systems, meaning you can control up to six 450hp outboard engines from your helm position.
Optional extras range from an extended 5-year warranty (3 years is offered as standard), to a choice of cowling colours (black with grey accents, or white with red accents).
“The launch of the new Mercury Racing 450R outboard has been long anticipated,” said Ben Allen, general manager at EP Barrus. “This sets us way ahead of our competitors with not only the power and weight, but the technologies to back it up. We’re very excited to introduce this to our customers, boat builders and authorised dealers alike, and look forward to the opportunities that it brings.”
Production of the Mercury Racing 450R is currently underway, with pricing and release dates to be confirmed in the near future.
