Stena Feronia, a Stena Line passenger ferry entering Belfast

Harbour was involved in a collision with a cargo ship last night.

The incident happened at 19:10 between

Carrickfergus and Helen’s Bay where the channel narrows, about a mile from

Belfast Lough.

Two RNLI lifeboats were called to assist with

damage control and assessment. According to a statement issued by the RNLI, the

340-passenger Stena Feronia ferry was damaged, but was able to make it to the terminal in

Belfast Lough. However, the 87m cargo ship, Union Moon, was badly damaged above the

waterline.

While there

are no reports of any injuries, a full investigation by the Marine Accident

Investigation Branch (MAIB) is currently underway.
