Mike Lovell died overnight at Southampton General Hospital; co-driver Dan Whapples remains in serious condition

A powerboat racer has died after suffering serious injuries when his boat flipped during a P1 SuperStock event in Weymouth.

Mike Lovell (below), racing for the Peters & May team, succumbed to his injuries last night at Southampton General Hospital.

His co-driver, Dan Whapples, remains in a serious but stable condition, P1 SuperStock said in a statement this morning.

“Our thoughts are with the whole powerboat community and particularly with Mike and Dan’s family and friends,” the statement added.

According to the BBC, Lovell and Whapples were on the second lap of the last race of the day when they hit the wash of other boats and barrel-rolled.

Both were thrown clear of their boat and quickly picked up and airlifted to the Southampton hospital.

Organisers cancelled the race and a report has been submitted to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.
