Row over funding for inland waterways

Boat charges for owners on the inland waterways are set to rise despite the announcement of extra Government funding in the network.

The Environment Agency has secured an extra £2.75m in Government funding for Britain’s inland waterways by April 2005.

The money enables the EA to double its annual spending by more than £4m to £8.75m.

But the cash injection comes as the EA proposes to put up boat registration fees by 5.5% and mooring fees by 2.5% for 2005/6, prompting anger among waterway-user groups.
