Sunseeker blaze in Sotogrande

Costa del Sol resident Paul Kingsley reports that two guardia Civil officers saved the lives of four people trapped below decks when an electrical fire took hold of the 80ft Sunseeker Manhattan Myakka

The Southampton registered Sunseeker Manhattan 80 Myakka was destroyed by fire in Puerto Sotogrande marina early last week. Four of the six onboard were trapped below decks at the time but were saved by two Guardia Civil officers.

According to a report received from MBY reader Paul Kingsley, based on the Costa del Sol, the boat was owned from new by colourful Formula 1 boss Eddie Jordan and was sold to its present owners when Jordan bought a new 105ft Sunseeker.

Kingsley reports that that Myakka’s skipper was in a nearby Chinese restaurant while six people stayed on the boat. It is believed the fire started behind a television set. The six onboard attempted to tackle the blaze with a fire extinguisher but without success. Four were trapped below as the fire spread.

Two officers of the Guardia Civil responded quickly and helped the four to escape via the forward hatch, leaving the boat to burn itself out.
