World's largest cruise ship now carrying 18 of the world's largest lifeboats
The largest cruise ship in the world, Oasis of the Seas, now has the added distinction of carrying the world’s largest lifeboats.
Each CRV55 catamaran lifeboat can carry up to 370 people on two levels and weighs 44 tonnes fully loaded.
The boat, which is 16.7m long with a beam of 5.6m, is powered by twin 70hp diesels giving a speed of six knots.
Schat-Harding, the lifeboat’s designer and builder, says that the CRV55 marks a step change in the safe evacuation of large ships and is the first of a whole new generation of very large and very safe lifeboats.
Eighteen of the new boats as well as smaller lifeboats are carried aboard Oasis of the Seas, which can accommodate up to 6360 passengers and 2100 crew.
