Racing legend Shelley Jory-Leigh to make a comeback

Shelley Jory-Leigh returns to Superstock after crashing out of Powerboat GPS

Racing legend Shelley Jory-Leigh is to make a comeback to offshore racing in a re-launch of the class where she made her debut almost a decade ago.

She will be joining the P1 Superstock series which replaced the Honda Formula 4-stroke series where she became British National Champion in 2007.

Shelley was badly injured last year when Spirit of Belgium, a much larger class of racer, crashed and sunk in Sardinia. It was doubtful she would race again but following weeks of recovery she now feels ready to get back behind the wheel.

She explains: “I had resigned myself that I wouldn’t be racing this season but I have to admit I would have missed it immensely. I’d certainly have missed the buzz and adrenaline rush I get waiting for the start and throughout the whole race.”

The 2011 Season sees her return to the new P1 Stock 250 Panther Class as Team Helvetia Wealth. Joining her as navigator is former Zapcat Team Champion and close family friend Dan Smith (pictured together).

The season starts this coming weekend (June 11-12) in Jersey for the first of the five championship rounds. The fleet then moves on to Plymouth, Hull and Cowes before the final round in Liverpool on September 10-11.

The Superstock series will be introducing a new course format this season designed to bring competitors even closer inshore in an attempt to improve the viewing for the many spectators the class constantly attracts.
